While my husband and kids were playing the Wii the other night, I decided to engage in a little scientific research. I made two bags of popcorn, both of them Orville Redenbacher’s. The first was Movie Theater Butter flavor; the second was Smart Pop! Butter flavor.
Now for the taste test. My husband reached for the Movie Theater flavor first as if by instinct. “Try the other one,” I chided. He did. And to his surprise, it was good too. He figured the “94% Fat Free” on the box meant that it was also 94% taste free. “And what I like about it,” he said, “is that it isn’t greasy so I can eat and hold the remote at the same time!” I personally thought Smart Pop was a little too salty, but if you don’t mind the salt, this may be a great alternative.
Here is the nutritional data straight from the box so you can compare the two (note that it is comparing two different serving sizes):
Smart Pop: 3 tablespoons unpopped – 120 calories; 2 grams fat; 25 grams carbohydrates; and 4 grams of protein.
Movie Theater: 2 tablespoons unpopped – 170 calories; 12 grams fat; 16 grams carbohydrates; and 2 grams protein.
